The Faculty of Engineering of Zanjan University started its activity in 1987 initiating with the field of Civil Engineering and subsequently, the departments of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical engineering, Architectural Engineering, Computer Engineering, Surveying and Geomatics Engineering, Mining Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials and Metallurgy Engineering, Fine Arts (Painting) and Industrial Engineering started their activities and student admission. At the present time, the Faculty of Engineering includes 11 different departments that admit students in 20 sub-disciplines for the bachelor's degree.

In recent years, the postgraduate programs in the Faculty of Engineering have had a significant quantitative and qualitative advancement, as a result of which this faculty is one of the best universities in terms of education and research. At the present time, the Faculty of Engineering is admitting students in 18 sub-disciplines.

During the recent years, Faculty of Engineering has attempted to attract highly qualified faculty members, establishing new physical infrastructures and laboratory, software and hardware equipment. According to the research capabilities of the departments of different fields in this faculty and being authorized by the Ministry of Science Research and Technology for developing PhD courses, the faculty offers degrees at PhD level in Electrical Engineering (Control Engineering, Power Engineering and Electronics Engineering ), Civil Engineering (Structural Engineering, Geotechnical and Foundation Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering and Transport Engineering), Architectural Engineering, Computer Engineering (Artificial Intelligence) and Mechanical Engineering (Energy Conversion, Design and Drafting).
